Sure, it’s early days, and 5G is still in nascent stages of roll out, but according to OpenSignal, current deployments in the U.S. offer the best peak speeds in the world.
The United States has the fastest 5G peak speeds in the world, due to operators’ use of millimeter wave spectrum and large available channels, according to new analysis from OpenSignal.
The company looked at device-based data from eight countries and concluded that 5G speeds overall were “dramatically higher” than currently available peak download speeds on 4G networks.
The U.S. led the pack, with users experiencing peak 5G download speeds of 1.8 Gbps. In second place was Switzerland, with 5G peak speeds of 1.14 Gbps; the third-fastest 5G peak speeds were found in South Korea, clocking in at about 1 Gbps. The 5G peak speed in the U.S. was about 2.7 times the peak LTE speeds that users experienced.
Even at 1.8 Gbps, the U.S. is well below the theoretical max of 5G, but speeds are expected to improve over time and it still represents a solid bump from 4G LTE.
